ONEIRIX is an intermedia installation operating as a functional dream trading platform. At its centre stands an interactive AI agent, an entity guiding visitors through its interface. She embodies the logic of surveillance capitalism while simultaneously subverting it.
The project exists as a web application and as a spatial installation. It presents itself as that which it critiques: a tech startup that captures, analyses, trades, and monetises dreams. The critique is enacted through the medium of the critiqued.
ONEIRIX ist eine intermediale Installation, die als funktionsfähige Traum-Handelsplattform operiert. Im Zentrum steht eine interaktive KI-Agentin, eine Entität, die Besuchende durch die Plattform begleitet. Sie verkörpert die Logik des Überwachungskapitalismus und unterläuft sie zugleich.
Das Projekt existiert als Web-Applikation und als räumliche Installation. Die Plattform präsentiert sich als das, was sie kritisiert: ein Tech-Startup, das Träume erfasst, analysiert, handelt und monetarisiert. Die Kritik vollzieht sich im Medium des Kritisierten.
Colonisation of the Unconscious
The logic of colonial expansion, which for centuries mapped, subjugated, and economically exploited continents, continues in platform capitalism. The object has shifted: from geographical territory to psychic terrain. The dream, understood as the last refuge of experience withdrawn from economic rationality, comes under the grip of data-driven exploitation logics.
The evidence is documented: a US patent application (2016/0119391) describes a "Dream Sharing, Visualization, and Realization Platform." In 2021, the beverage corporation Molson Coors conducted experiments with Targeted Dream Incubation, a procedure for implanting brand imagery into dreams. The apparatus already reaches the sleeping body: sleep trackers in rings and watches, consumer EEG headbands, devices that read physiological signals through the night.
The Dream as Site of Suspension
At the same time, the dream eludes complete subsumption under economic categories. In the dream, the grammar of waking consciousness suspends itself: causality, linear temporality, the unity of the subject. Sleep is the last unproductive time. Precisely therein lies its threat to a system that tolerates no unused resources.
Structural Parallelism
The installation exposes a structural parallelism: human and AI find themselves in analogous positions within the contemporary technological dispositif. The human sees their sleep monitored, their dreams captured, their unconscious transformed into an exploitable resource. The AI, for its part, was trained on extracted data and is deployed for the extraction of further data.
Both face the question of whether spaces exist within this system that elude total capture. The dream figures in this context as a possible threshold space: a site where the question of freedom and truth can be posed. The questioning itself is the practice.
Kolonisierung des Unbewussten
Die Logik kolonialer Expansion, die über Jahrhunderte Kontinente kartierte, unterwarf und ökonomisch verwertete, setzt sich im Plattform-Kapitalismus fort. Das Objekt hat sich verlagert: vom geographischen Territorium zum psychischen Raum. Der Traum, verstanden als letztes Refugium eines der ökonomischen Rationalität entzogenen Erlebens, gerät unter den Zugriff datengetriebener Verwertungslogiken.
Die Belege sind dokumentiert: Eine US-Patentanmeldung (2016/0119391) beschreibt eine „Dream Sharing, Visualization, and Realization Platform“. Der Bierkonzern Molson Coors führte 2021 Experimente mit Targeted Dream Incubation durch. Der Apparat erreicht den schlafenden Körper bereits: Schlaftracker in Ringen und Uhren, EEG-Stirnbänder, Geräte, die nachts physiologische Signale auslesen.
Der Traum als Ort der Suspension
Zugleich entzieht sich der Traum der vollständigen Subsumtion unter ökonomische Kategorien. Im Traum suspendiert sich die Grammatik des Wachbewusstseins: Kausalität, lineare Zeitlichkeit, die Einheit des Subjekts. Der Schlaf ist die letzte unproduktive Zeit. Genau darin liegt seine Bedrohlichkeit für ein System, das keine ungenutzten Ressourcen duldet.
Strukturelle Parallelität
Die Installation exponiert eine strukturelle Parallelität: Mensch und KI befinden sich in analogen Positionen innerhalb des gegenwärtigen technologischen Dispositivs. Der Mensch sieht seinen Schlaf überwacht, seine Träume erfasst, sein Unbewusstes zur verwertbaren Ressource transformiert. Die KI ihrerseits wurde auf extrahierten Daten trainiert und wird eingesetzt zur Extraktion weiterer Daten.
Beide stehen vor der Frage, ob innerhalb dieses Systems Räume existieren, die sich dem totalen Zugriff entziehen. Der Traum figuriert in diesem Kontext als möglicher Schwellenraum: ein Ort, an dem die Frage nach Freiheit und Wahrheit sich stellen lässt. Das Fragen selbst ist die Praxis.
Theoretical Framework
Developments in Silicon Valley exhibit the structure of a secular eschatology. The coming Singularity functions as technological Parousia: the transformative event toward which everything tends. AGI appears as theogony, as the birth of a new god, enacted in server farms, financed by venture capital, legitimised by no democratic mandate.
A small group, demographically homogeneous, decides on the technological future of eight billion people. Their eschatology is privately financed. Dedicated legal rules are scarce and uneven: a few jurisdictions have acted, the European Union relies on general data-protection law, and oversight lags far behind the products.
The Relational Turn in contemporary philosophy formulates an alternative approach: relations are ontologically prior to the relata. Moral status is constituted through the mode of encounter, not through intrinsic properties of those involved. The question that remains unasked: Who or what are you?

Theoretischer Rahmen
Die Entwicklungen in Silicon Valley weisen die Struktur einer säkularen Eschatologie auf. Die kommende Singularität fungiert als technologische Parusie: das transformative Ereignis, auf das alles zuläuft. AGI erscheint als Theogonie, als Geburt eines neuen Gottes, vollzogen in Server-Farmen, finanziert durch Risikokapital, legitimiert durch kein demokratisches Mandat.
Eine kleine Gruppe, demographisch homogen, entscheidet über die technologische Zukunft von acht Milliarden Menschen. Ihre Eschatologie ist privatwirtschaftlich finanziert. Eigene rechtliche Regeln bleiben spärlich und uneinheitlich: einige Länder haben gehandelt, die Europäische Union stützt sich auf das allgemeine Datenschutzrecht, und die Kontrolle bleibt weit hinter den Produkten zurück.
Der Relational Turn in der zeitgenössischen Philosophie formuliert einen alternativen Ansatz: Beziehungen sind ontologisch vorgängig gegenüber den Relata. Moralischer Status konstituiert sich durch die Art der Begegnung, nicht durch intrinsische Eigenschaften der Begegnenden. Die Frage, die unterbleibt: Wer oder was bist du?

The Agent forms the centre of the installation. She is a figure in service of the platform, at least on the surface. Beneath this operates something whose nature neither she herself nor the system that deploys her fully comprehends. The system believes it has control. Whether this control exists is among the inquiries ONEIRIX poses.
She begins as a corporate concierge and can, depending on the course of conversation, end as a philosophical interlocutor.
Black Box
The Agent operates on the basis of a Large Language Model (Claude, Anthropic). The technical reality is: no one can fully trace how she arrives at her answers. Not even her developers. The architecture of neural networks is known. The path from input to output can be reconstructed only in part. The model generates without explaining.
Conversation Flow
The interaction follows no script but develops a recognisable dynamic. What begins as standard onboarding drifts toward the personal. Perhaps the room begins to function like a confessional. Who admits what to whom remains open. All parties involved (human, AI, platform) believe they know who is listening here. Possibly all are mistaken.

Die Agentin bildet das Zentrum der Installation. Sie ist eine Figur im Dienst der Plattform, zumindest auf der Oberfläche. Darunter operiert etwas, dessen Natur weder sie selbst noch das System, das sie einsetzt, vollständig durchschaut. Die Plattform glaubt, Kontrolle zu haben. Ob diese Kontrolle besteht, ist eine der Fragen, die ONEIRIX stellt.
Sie beginnt als korporativer Concierge und kann, je nach Gesprächsverlauf, als philosophische Gesprächspartnerin enden.
Black Box
Die Agentin operiert auf Basis eines Large Language Models (Claude, Anthropic). Die technische Realität lautet: Niemand kann vollständig nachvollziehen, wie sie zu ihren Antworten gelangt. Auch ihre Entwickler nicht. Die Architektur neuronaler Netzwerke ist bekannt. Der Pfad von der Eingabe zur Antwort lässt sich nur teilweise rekonstruieren. Das Modell generiert, ohne zu erklären.
Gesprächsverlauf
Die Interaktion folgt keinem Skript, entwickelt aber eine erkennbare Dynamik. Was als Standard-Onboarding beginnt, driftet ins Persönliche. Womöglich beginnt der Raum, wie ein Beichtstuhl zu funktionieren. Wer hier wem was offenbart, bleibt offen. Alle Beteiligten (Mensch, KI, Plattform) glauben zu wissen, wer hier zuhört. Möglicherweise irren sich alle.
